Lear’s Environmental Management System provides a systematic method for minimizing our impact on the environment. From ISO 14001:2015 certification to collecting energy, waste and water data, we have developed a quantitative and qualitative approach to measure and track our efforts in reducing our carbon footprint.
Lear’s global continuous improvement teams use lean manufacturing processes to identify energy and waste reduction projects, track progress and share best practices. We are consistently achieving our goals for using less energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The world has a sufficient water supply to meet everyone’s needs—if we all work together to better manage it. We recognize our responsibility to manage and monitor our water usage and wastewater discharges throughout our operations, surface materials processes and to work towards usage targets that provide more water for everyone.
The best way to eliminate waste is to avoid creating it in the first place. Our use of environmentally sustainable foam, natural fibers, responsible leather and ocean waste plastic are all part of our resources and materials supply chain.

We joined the UN Global Compact demonstrating our commitment to supporting human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption as well as 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
We established a new Human Rights Policy to clearly define how we approach, govern and support the dignity of people throughout our operations, our communities and our global supply chain.
We improved responsible sourcing efforts in our supply chain with the ability to trace leather hides from every stage of production back to the groups of processing centers, feed yards or ranches where the animals were raised.
No Deforestation Policy ensures primary forests and natural ecosystems are not endangered by clear cutting or burning while supporting enhanced agroforestry, reforestation and restoration.
Sustainability is deeply integrated into everything we do, from how we make our products and how we work with our suppliers to how we support our local communities.
As the automotive industry evolves, ESG issues have become even more significant, not only for Lear, but also for our customers, shareholders and our Board of Directors. To intensify our commitment to advancing ESG initiatives around the world, our global ESG leadership is supported by three senior executives.
Supporting human rights, expecting respect, avoiding corruption, ensuring data privacy and providing high-quality and safe products—all of these issues affect our employees every day. To ensure a culture of integrity, we have developed a broad Compliance and Ethics Program.
As an automotive supplier of choice, we have suppliers, too. We expect our more than 3,000 production suppliers to share our commitment to ESG and ethical conduct. In addition, our suppliers earn International Automotive Task Force (IATF) Standard 16949 certification. We audit regularly to ensure compliance.
