Lear South Africa and the Adopt-a-Baby Program
Lear's E-Systems plant in Port Elizabeth team members volunteered to "adopt a baby" for a community service initiative, where employees could choose to support a child and provide items as donations from his or her wish list.
The nearby Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Care Home provides a place of safety for children (from infants to the age of 18 years old) who have been abandoned, abused or neglected, or children that are infected with HIV/AIDS or fetal alcohol syndrome. The Home's mission is to nurture, love and help develop children's physical, emotional and cognitive abilities and provide a safe environment conducive to health and growth.
Etienne Els (Plant Mgr.) led the plant team that visited the home to distribute the Lear donations. "We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all in assisting children with special needs," said Zeeyana Mohamed (HR Mgr.). "Once again, you've set the tone for the year by helping us run a successful charity event. Your hard work has not gone unnoticed and I, along with the entire plant management team, would like to express our deep gratitude to each and every one of you. Thank you so much for your tremendous help and assistance."
With approximately 1500 team members, Port Elizabeth began operations in 2010 and cuts, prepares, assembles, finishes and tests wiring harnesses. About 8000 km (500 miles) east of Cape Town, the city itself has approximately 300,000 residents.
